Beginners: My essential makeup brushes

pinceaux de maquillage
Knowing which brushes to use when applying makeup remains a true modern-day dilemma. Is this brush suitable for the texture of my product? Will it guarantee good coverage or good application?
This is even more problematic for novices who don't know the difference among all the available brush references.
Here's a small guide for you beginners, so you finally know which makeup brushes to invest in!
______________

1/ Makeup brushes for the complexion

4 brushes are essential for a complete complexion makeup.

Foundation makeup brush

It most often comes in a "cat's tongue" shape with an irregular and rounded end. This brush has dense bristles, which trap the product well, ensuring good coverage of the product on the skin. It also allows the product to be spread well on the skin while still guaranteeing uniform coverage.

Its irregular tip allows makeup to be applied to hard-to-reach areas such as the sides of the nose or the eye contour, while also ensuring good coverage. The bristles are dense but flexible, allowing them to adapt well to the contours of the face.

For a lighter application of foundation, prefer a "diffuser" brush with much more flared bristles.

Concealer makeup brush

This one also comes in a "cat's tongue" shape. We could even say it resembles a foundation brush, but smaller!

Like the foundation brush, the dense but flexible bristles offer good coverage of the area, its narrower head offering more localized application.

It is particularly used to erase signs of fatigue such as dark circles and bags, or imperfections. Depending on the color of the imperfection, following the principle of colorimetry, the concealer can be tinted or not.

Be careful, always dab the product onto the area to conceal and not stretch it, at the risk of almost no coverage.

Blush makeup brush

This brush is very often beveled to perfectly fit the contours of the face, especially the hollows of the cheeks or the contours, because yes, this brush can also be used for contouring techniques.

This type of brush allows you to perfectly sculpt the face to play with areas of shadow or, on the contrary, light.

Powder makeup brush

The powder brush has a very large tip and very flared and very flexible bristles, offering a light, airy, quick, and diffused application of powder products on the face.

The deposit of product on the complexion is then light for a powdery finish and an even complexion, whether the product is a loose powder, a compact powder, or a bronzer.

You can choose a "classic" powder brush or a kabuki brush, a portable complexion brush with a small size and a short, flat handle. It offers ease of grip and storage.

2/ Makeup brushes for the eyes

For eye makeup, the story gets a bit more complicated because there are over fifteen references. The objectives are nevertheless the same: apply, blend, shade, or trace.

Base makeup brush

This brush is a classic eye makeup brush.

It is a basic brush used to apply a flat color to the mobile eyelid. It is suitable for applying a light base for sophisticated makeup or for the basic application of a single eyeshadow.

If, daily, you simply want to use an eyeshadow on the mobile eyelid, this brush is for you!

Eyeshadow brushes

Soft bristle brushes:

Soft bristle brushes are ideal for blending or applying eyeshadow in a smoky way on the mobile eyelid, in the crease of the eyelid, or in the outer corner of the eye to create a "cat eye" or a "banana" shape. They are perfect for creating gradients or blends.
A "cat eye" involves creating an inverted "v" in the outer corner of the eye at the orbital bone, while a "banana" corresponds to the same technique but in a rounded shape.
There are multiple shapes of soft bristle brushes: banana shape with long bristles, beveled shape of varying thickness, etc. It's up to you to choose the shape that suits you best and offers you the most successful application.

Dense bristle makeup brushes:

An eyeshadow brush with short, dense bristles allows for thick and intense lines.
It is particularly suitable for application along the lower lash line, essential for finishing makeup, or for blending a pencil line applied along the upper lash line for a smoky effect on the mobile eyelid.
In this case, these dense bristles don't really blend but rather stretch and blur the product.

A dense bristle eyeshadow brush is also suitable for applying a product in touches for very intense makeup in the outer corner of the eyelid. This is perfect for applying a very dark color, for example, black, for an incredibly defined and intense look.

Eyeliner makeup brush

This brush has an ultra-fine tip for drawing an eyeliner line worthy of the name, like the Beautelive eyeliner brush.

It is ideal for applying cream or cake products and is suitable for both beginners and more experienced users, as this application is easier than with an eyeliner pen or liquid eyeliner. This brush also allows you to draw very thin or thicker lines.

You can also choose to apply your favorite eyeshadow as an eyeliner by slightly dampening it. But be careful, not all eyeshadows lend themselves to this!

Optional: the fan makeup brush

This brush remains a very practical finishing accessory for eye makeup.

With very flared fan-shaped bristles, this brush removes excess product that falls onto the cheeks during makeup application. It allows you to sweep away, without ever leaving a trace.

This brush is therefore very useful for those who love elaborate eye makeup, especially since this makeup brush is inexpensive compared to its great utility.

3/ Eyebrow makeup brushes

Angled eyebrow makeup brush

It allows for perfect application of an eyebrow makeup product, whether the texture is wax or cream.

Its particular angled shape allows it to follow the shape of the eyebrow and the direction of hair growth for the easiest possible application and a natural finish.

Spoolie makeup brush

The spoolie brush is a brush used to comb eyebrows to define and discipline them in the natural direction of hair growth.

It guarantees an excellent base before applying an eyebrow product or for daily use for well-defined eyebrows. It is a true ally for a structured look.

4/ The lip makeup brush

If you want to apply lip makeup, only one brush is essential: a thin lip brush, retractable or not, to properly apply lip gloss or lipstick. All textures can be applied: cream, wax, or liquid.

This thin brush perfectly hugs the contour of the lips for precise and uniform application without smudging.

It also allows the product to be spread well over the entire lip without waste or irregularities.

Finally! Your brush bag is now well stocked, you can now proceed with your makeup!
Note that many brands offer makeup brush kits to have all the necessary equipment for good makeup in a single purchase.
